WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER...IS YOUR ENGINE READY?
Drain and flush your engine cooling system. A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water is sufficient. It is important that at least 40% water is mixed with the antifreeze. Always pre-mix the water and antifreeze mixture before adding to your engine. Using 100% antifreeze will cause your engine to overheat severely and seize the piston to the liner!
Check clutch for proper adjustment and grease your clutch at this time. To insure free smooth operation, add a small amount of oil to the connections of the governor adjusting lever, throttle lever and all moving parts.
Drain your crankcase oil and remove the oil pickup screen. Clean the entire crankcase and screen at this time. This will remove all contaminants from the inside of the crankcase. This is also a good time to inspect all internal oil lines for broken or loose fittings. After replacing the oil filter, add a good grade SAE 10W30 or SAE 20 weight detergent motor oil. Only on new engines or newly rebuilt engines, use SAE 30 non-detergent motor oil for the first three weeks of operation.
Inspect your fan and fan belt for wear. Remove and replace if needed. Remove radiator cap and inspect the gasket. Replace if needed.
Install a new spark plug and inspect the plug wire.
- Breaker-less ignition system - .035 to .040 gap
- Conventional ignition system - .025 to .028 gap
- If H2S is present, use plug with stainless steel electrodes (Stitt 8-Mex).
Check your engine's valve tappet clearance. Arrow C-Series tappet clearance is as follows:
Inspect all shutdown switches for loose or broken wires. Ground your safety switches to make sure the switch will shut down your engine.
Remove and clean the engine's crankcase breather. A dirty or broken breather will cause your engine to pressurize the crankcase and leak large amounts of oil. Also, inspect and clean the Arrow oil filter. Replace the oil in the oil bath air cleaner with clean SAE 10 weight motor oil. Following the above recommendations will help your engine weather the cold days ahead.
